DIY Your Floral Christmas Table CentrepieceYvette

Table Centrepiece

What Christmas dinner table is complete without a stunning, summery floral centrepiece? As a florist, these arrangements are some of the most fun to design and create, but you don’t have to be a professional to make something really special. You can use any flowers or foliage that is in season or that you have readily available, and the only limit is your own imagination! The one we’ve created below would look right at home on the table for your family’s Christmas lunch, and it’s super simple to put together.

Note: While this arrangement uses floral foam, you can get the same effect by using a container filled with chicken wire – and it’s a whole lot better for the environment.

Ingredients

  • 12 x stems Blue Hydrangea
  • 1 bunch White Lisianthus
  • 10 x stems David Austin Roses
  • Half bunch Viburnum leaves
  • 1 bunch English Box
  • 1 bunch Lemon Water Lilies

Tools

  • Basics Tool Kit – floristry snips, secateurs, towel, apron, gloves
  • Container filled with chicken wire or a rectangular dish to hold foam

Design Steps

  • Soak floral foam (if using it) and place it into your chosen container.
  • Cut and place viburnum leaves into the outer edge of the foam. Evenly distribute the leaves by placing them on opposing sides of the arrangement. Cut and place the english box using the same method of even distribution.
  • Evenly distribute the english box and viburnum leaves throughout the centre of the foam. You will create the height of the arrangement in this step. At this point, step back from your arrangement and assess whether your scale and placements are correct and whether shape and proportion are achieved. Remember – we want the guests to be able to see each other!
  • Insert the hydrangea. Begin at one end of the container and cut and place your stems so the blooms rest nicely on the foliage and are firmly placed into the floral foam. Continue to disperse the hydrangea so that the colour blue is evenly distributed throughout the arrangement.
  • Create groupings of the roses that are evenly distributed throughout the arrangement. The size of the hydrangea dominates, so grouping the white roses and lisianthus will balance the flowers against the hydrangea.
  • Continue the grouping with the white lisianthus flowers, using the rule of even distribution.
  • To finish, evenly distribute the water lilies throughout the arrangement. Rather than grouping the water lilies as we have done with the roses and Lisianthus, one water lily per placement will suffice. This is because when they open the beautiful lemon colour will make the blooms become focal points throughout the arrangement, causing the viewer’s eye to travel in and throughout the design.
  • Finally, top up the arrangement with water.

Tips:

  • To ensure your guests can see each other make sure the flowers sit at a reasonable height – not too high!
  • Regularly stand back from any arrangement you construct to gain an overall perspective of the shape and form.
  • Maintain freshness by topping up with water daily.
