Some of our flower workshop and flower course students have been already been using some of these in class this week – and it’s been great to see what they come up with!

At Bloom College Flower Design School we create Floristry Courses and Flower Workshops for beginners, the hobbyist and those wanting to pursue floristry as a career.

With our Career Change students in their final week this week, it’s been a sea of colour and beautiful blooms in the Port Melbourne classroom…take a look and see what we mean!

It’s been so great to see the progression of these students since they started last month. We wish them all the best and look forward to seeing what they do next.

We still have so much on offer in 2015 at Bloom College in all 3 of our locations. From Flower Basics and Flower Therapy Courses, to Christmas themed Floristry Workshops (including Hampers and Gift Wrapping), and our super popular Event Styling Workshop this weekend – we aren’t slowing down just yet! Flower Crowns at MMA

On the 15^th October, Bloom College hit the road, and travelled out to Epping, where we held a series of short Flower Crown Workshops at Melbourne Market Authority (MMA).

Flower Crowns are so popular right now (think: Spring Racing Carnival, Weddings, Events – anything!), so participants were keen to learn how to create their own.

The results speak for themselves…

Flowers are a great gift to give – you can give them when you visit a friend in their home, to brighten up someone’s day if they’ve been unwell, to say thank-you – or just because…

To make the flowers just that bit more personal, you can quickly and easily wrap them before leaving home.

Here we show you the basic steps involved:

By following these steps, you can then get creative, and customise the look of your flowers by experimenting with different papers, ribbons, and accessories. A hand written card always goes a long way too.

With less than 3 months until Christmas (which is sure to fly!), now’s the time to start planning.

Tools and Accessories – Getting Started

When you first get started in floristry, it can be hard to know what you need. Having the right tools and equipment will make a big difference when preparing and arranging your flowers.

So – what do you need?

The Basics

Are you a hobbyist – or would like to try out whether flower arranging is for you? Then these items are what you should start with. The good news is that these items can also be used for basic gardening activities, so they will also come in handy even if you decide not to continue on your floristry journey. If you’ve done one of our floristry workshops, and want to continue learning at home, these items will be a great way to get started.

The Basic items you should have:

An apron
Hand towel
Gloves
Secateurs – ones that are suitable for flowers, foliage and wire cutting
Secateurs – another set that are suitable for heavy foliage and sticks

The Essentials

Are you super keen to continue on your flower journey? Then these items are what you’ll need to have in your tool kit. For those of you who are doing our Flower Basics, Flower Therapy, or Career Change Courses – these are what we recommend for you.

The Essential items you should have:

Apron
Hand towel
Gloves
Secateurs – suitable for flowers, foliage and wire cutting
Secateurs – another set that are suitable for heavy foliage and sticks
Multi-sharpener for keeping your secateurs in top condition
1 roll of Floral tape (we love the Parafilm brand)
Wire – we recommend having the following size gauges .3, .4, .5, .7, .9

Whether you are a hobbyist, just starting your floristry journey, or looking for a career change and moving into floristry, having the right tools and equipment will help you when preparing and arranging your flowers – so start with the lists above to set you on your way.
