Flower Trends for 2023

Well, so long 2022. This year we’ve seen a boom in eclectic wild-flower bouquets, sustainable floristry designs, native flowers as wedding bouquets and the incorporation of straw into large arrangements – proving once again that floristry is as trendy and exciting as fashion, interior design or hair. But now we can put 2022’s contributions behind us as well look forward to what 2023 is going to bring! Any guesses? Jot them down now and let us know after if you guessed any of the new trends in floristry for 2023.

Planet-Friendly House Plants

It’s no surprise that sustainability and going green are continuing to impact the floristry industry, building upon this year’s interest in floral foam alternatives.

In 2023, expect climate-friendly plants to become very popular with your average plant parent. Research from NASA found that there are actually 50+ houseplants that will help remove pollutants and gases from the air in your home.

These plants include areca palm, philodendron, rubber plant, peace lily, aloe vera, boston fern and spider plant – just to name a few! These plants filter and purify the air, with peace lilies in particular able to improve indoor air quality by up to 60%!

Smell the Lavender

According to trend forecasters and colour experts, Digital Lavender will be the colour of the year for 2023! Florists are already seeing an uptick in requests for bouquets that feature lavender – both in colour and with actual lavender. Lavender’s calming fragrance usually makes it a no-brainer for cool-toned bouquets for the home, and the colour contrasts beautifully in arrangements with bright orange or coral flowers.

With lavender’s ethereal beauty, we wouldn’t be surprised if it became a regular addition to wedding bouquets next year too, especially as people seek to add this on-trend colour to their wedding palette.

Lily of the Valley

White Lily of the valley

The favourite flower of Queen Elizabeth, Lily of the Valley was featured in her coronation bouquet, throughout the Buckingham Palace gardens and in Kate Middleton’s wedding flowers. The elegant flower is also expected to make an appearance at the coronation of King Charles. Being thrust into the spotlight again has experts sure that the flower will experience another boom in popularity, likely in bridal bouquets (expect petite & pretty posies), as well as throughout the art and fashion worlds.

Lily of the Valley symbolises love, purity and motherhood and is well known for its delicate bells and gentle, sweet scent.

#PressedFlowers

Pressed flowers are having a moment thanks to TikTok, with the #pressedflowers hashtag featuring videos with a combined 170.6 million views! DIY flower-pressers have been sharing their tips and tricks with the world, proving once again how special pressed flowers are for preserving that moment in time.

Caroline Grimble from Bloom & Wild spoke about the decision to add flower presses to their catalogue, writing, ‘We noticed an uplift in people sharing ways to preserve their wedding bouquets on Pinterest this year but this trend will hit the mainstream in 2023, with flower presses no longer the reserve of crafters.’

Barbiecore Bouquets

With all the talk surrounding the upcoming Barbie movie, hot barbie-pink is back in. Florists are seeing customers request bouquets full of bold, vibrant pinks over more pastel, cool-toned arrangements. Think hot-pink and bright orange broken up with vivid greenery to really make those colours pop.

Jo Reason, Head of Brand & Range for Bloom & Wild, had this to say: ‘We have already seen an increase in people searching for more vibrant pinks versus traditional pastel blush roses and predict the all-pink Barbiecore trend to surface around the middle of next year.’

White Bouquets

In what feels like a total 180 from barbiecore, all-white bouquets are predicted to be very popular in 2023. Again, Charles’ coronation is expected to be a contributing factor to this, but the concept of all-white bouquets for interior design isn’t that revolutionary.

You can also expect all-white wedding bouquets to become very popular, as we’re already starting to see this trend now, but expect white bouquets to become very mainstream throughout 2023. This is good to keep in mind for recommending to brides as we enter the new year.

2023 is set to bring lots of exciting new trends to play around with and really flex your creative muscles in the studio. And with so many trending colours to choose from, you can really have a lot of fun with your flowers next year!

What do you think of these new trends? Which one are you most excited to see? Send us a DM on Facebook or Instagram to let us know, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Chamomile

I’m absolutely crazy for these “wildflower” bouquets! Perfect for a country style or relaxed wedding vibe.⠀ ⠀

It’s so interesting to see Baby’s Breath (Gypsophila or Gyp) come back into fashion but I am loving the use of Chamomile as well! Not only does it make a tasty bed time tea but the flowers are super cute and have a long vase life.⠀

Monstera Variegata

STUNNING Monstera Variegata from @foreverplanty Thank you for the Friday inspiration and beautiful pic!⁣ ⁣

After doing a little research on these lovely plants, this kind of variegated monstera is called ‘Albo-Variegata,’ which has white paint-like splotches on the leaves, or the leaf is half white or sometimes wholly white.⁣ ⁣

I don’t own one of these beauties but I do have a Silver Pothos which is another kind of variegated plant; it’s also stunning to look at and very easy to grow.⁣

Do You Pin?

Here at Bloom College we LOVE Pinterest.  So much so, that we encourage all of our students (in particular the Career Change floristry students) to create an account and set up boards of things they love.

Are you just starting out with Pinterest? Once set up, we suggest you start with broad keywords such as ‘floral arrangements’, ‘vintage flowers’ and ‘wedding bouquet’.

You’ll soon see patterns emerging in what types of styles speak to you, and what you’re leaning towards.  You’ll also find inspiration when you’re looking to try something new.

If you’re attending our upcoming Event Styling or Wedding Bouquet workshops you may like to check out our ‘Wedding Flowers’ board, which has Chuppah’s, bouquets, table arrangement ideas – and heaps of other inspiration.
