Bloom of the Month – Protea

Protea’s really are deserving of the title “King”, as they are as beautiful, as they are grand.

Native to South Africa, these floristry favourite’s can be found all over the world and grow particularly well in Australia & South America. The King Protea is the national flower of South Africa.

They come in a wide variety of colours and sizes and because of this, their name was derived from the Greek god Proteus, who was able to change form at will. Due to this mythology, the Protea has become a symbol of change & diversity.

Protea’s are believe to be one of the oldest species of flower on the planet, with fossils dating back millions of years. Their survival may be due to their robust nature, with the ability to survive in extreme environments. & even survive wild fires!

They are very long lasting cut flowers and this makes them perfect for floristry. In recent years they have become extremely popular in wedding bouquets, and because of their show stopping beauty, we know why!

Pink ice, repens and Leucadendron discolor are available from now through to August/September.

The Gift of Flowers

According to study completed by the Rutgers university Human Emotions Lab, it was found that flowers create instant delight and happiness, and increase enjoyment and life satisfaction. Specifically, upon receiving a gift of flowers, the female study participants responded with true smiles and reported positive moods that lasted for days. ⁣

The presence of flowers also led to increased contact with family and friends.⁣ ⁣ The research reveals that those who send flowers, in comparison to other gifts, are viewed as successful, caring and emotionally intelligent people.⁣ ⁣

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and we can’t think of a better gift to show your love!⁣

Blooms Of The Month – April ’19

Kale

Sometimes referred to as “ornamental cabbage” flowering Kale can definitely steal the show when it comes to autumn blooms!

Coming in a variety of pinks, purples, greens & creamy whites, the ruffled leaves on this beauty make it a perfect compliment to other flowers in a bouquet or arrangement, and it is often used as the focal piece of bouquets or vase designs.

Kale can last a very long time after being cut, however they are known for becoming smelly, so maintaining clean vase water is necessary for a prolonged vase life.

Lisianthus

In contrast to the bold features of kale, Lisianthus has a gorgeous delicate bloom that is so versatile when used in floral designs.

They come in a range of colours from white, blue, purple, and pink as well as combinations of those hues. The blooms also come in a single form, with simply one row of petals, or a double form with several rows of petals.

These flowers are very delicate and can bruise easily in transport, so be careful when bringing them home from the wholesaler. Look for “lissies” that are partially open and not too tightly budded for the longest life.

Scabiosa

Scabiosa (sometimes referred to as the “Pincushion” flower) can be such a beautiful and unique addition to any arrangement due to the wide varieties available. As with the lisianthus, scabiosa come in single and double varieties.

Scabiosa colours can include burgundy, blue, white, pink, lavender, and red.

They are wonderful in the garden as they attract butterflies and insects.

They have long strong stems which work perfectly for creating height and dimension in “boho” style bouquets and arrangements, and are available at wholesalers now.

And breathe…

I love having flowers and plants around me not only because they are beautiful but because they remind me to be present and take a moment to breathe.⁣ ⁣

The year is racing by and self care activities like meditation can help to slow things down and help you regroup.⁣

Queen Anne’s Lace!

Today’s Bloom focus is the beautiful Queen Anne Lace!⁣

Part of the carrot family is it sometimes known as Wild Carrot, Bird’s Nest or Bishop’s Lace.⁣

Coming in green, white and chocolate it is a delicate yet full flower that can add intricacy and texture to any arrangement!⁣

As it grows in fields and is a wild flower, it’s perfect for the wild & free flowing arrangements that are trending right now!⁣

It’s also one of Bloom teacher Alyssa’s favourite blooms!⁣

Monstera Variegata

STUNNING Monstera Variegata from @foreverplanty Thank you for the Friday inspiration and beautiful pic!⁣ ⁣

After doing a little research on these lovely plants, this kind of variegated monstera is called ‘Albo-Variegata,’ which has white paint-like splotches on the leaves, or the leaf is half white or sometimes wholly white.⁣ ⁣

I don’t own one of these beauties but I do have a Silver Pothos which is another kind of variegated plant; it’s also stunning to look at and very easy to grow.⁣

The Cotton Plant

What an amazing plant is the cotton plant?!⁣ ⁣

Planted in summer to bloom around early autumn, it is not actually the flower of this plant that we most covet, but the fluffy white fibres that burst out of what is called the cotton boll.⁣ ⁣

The flower initially grows on top of the boll and only lasts about 3-4 days before withering and dropping off. The boll then begins to ripen in the sun and the fibres inside begin to expand, bursting out of the boll to create a most fascinating and beautiful natural resource.⁣ ⁣

Cotton stems seem to come in and out of fashion but are particularly popular arranged alone in a beautiful vase. I am going to try and find some arrangements using this stunning flora to inspire us all!⁣
